Clinical Studies
In recent years, the use of NMR Spectroscopy has become increasingly widespread in various clinical studies. Progression of therapy can be documented by observing a change in concentration of certain metabolites found in body fluids or cell systems. Moreover, statistical analysis can be performed (see figure below), thereby making it possible to detect the appearance of abnormal metabolic products more rapidly and accurately than by conventional methods.
The figure below shows a comparison of spectra taken in a clinical study on the treatment of diabetes mellitus II. The spectra show the decrease of 13C-labelled glucose over time, while lactate intensity increases simultaneously. Such tests can be used to observe the effects of drugs directly.
